To all who responded to my question about copying an AS/400 database file to an Excel file, I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. I realize there are a number of AS/400 solutions for copying to a text or delmited type file. What I'm looking for is a TRUE Excel file (BIFF4 or BIFF5 format), the type that Client Access download function can create.
Copying Spooled Files from the AS/400 To Your Desktop/Folders Using. Importing your file into an EXCEL spreadsheet. Using Text Import Wizard. The spooled output files are “fixed width” Click “NEXT” Excel allows you to set the width of each field.
I already use the CPYTOIMPF command but am not at all happy with it. It doesn't give any control over formatting. And, it you happen to have commas or double quotes in the data which you're copying (such as an item description), CPYTOIMPF doesn't handle them correctly. Simply concat your field values in a resulting alphanumeric field and output the field to a PF. Then run CPYTOPCD or CPYTOSTMF to convert to ASCII.
The file suffix is simply.txt When Excel opens this file it will see the tabs and assume them to be separators. Click on the Finish button to complete the import wizard and your done. I believe that Sequel can do this but I've never been a big Sequel fan and I don't want to pay that much (I'm looking for something for $500 or less.). I'd like more of a standalone utility that I could easily incorporate into our nightly batch processing. The people at Millennium Information Systems (www.millenniumis.com) were working on just such a product but they've apparently gone out of business (their phone's been disconnected and they don't respond to e-mails). Anyone know of such a product, or have anything in their bag of goodies they'd be willing to share? ThanksDave +- This is the Midrange System Mailing List!
